Hainan Medical University has formed a high-level research platform composed of several provincial and ministerial key laboratories. In total, there are 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education and 6 provincial key laboratories. The key laboratories of the Ministry of Education are the Key Laboratory of Emergency and Trauma Research, Ministry of Education, and the Key Laboratory of Tropical Translational Medicine, Ministry of Education. The provincial key laboratories include Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Tropical Medicinal Plant Research and Development, Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Human Reproduction and Genetics, Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Tumor Occurrence and Intervention, Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Trauma and Disaster Rescue Research , Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Tropical Brain Research and Translation, and Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Tropical Cardiovascular Disease Research. In addition, there are 5 provincial clinical medical research centers, 5 provincial engineering research centers, 8 academician workstations in Hainan Province, and 2 academician innovation centers, and 2 post-doctoral research stations.
In terms of key disciplinary areas, there are 8 national key clinical specialties including Emergency Medicine, Oncology, Critical Care Medicine, Neurosurgery, Cardiovascular Medicine, General Surgery, Clinical Nursing, and Medical Imaging, and 4 provincial key disciplinary areas including Clinical Medicine, Basic Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health and Health Management. Additionally, Traditional Chinese Medicine for Hepatobiliary Diseases and Acupuncture are defined as the key disciplinary areas of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
In terms of special laboratory and institution, there are 7 national drug clinical trial specialist bases including Department of Respiratory Medicine, Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Neurology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Department of Urology, Department of Endocrinology, and Department of Gastroenterology. There is one laboratory of the National Drug Preclinical Safety Evaluation Institution (Hainan Provincial Drug Safety Evaluation Research Center) and one human assisted reproductive technology access institution of the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China (Hainan Reproductive Medicine Center).
For the achievements during the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, our university has won 181 projects approved by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, with a funding amount of 61.848 million yuan. A total of 1,384 scientific research projects of various types and levels have been approved, with a total funding of 200.833 million yuan. There are 21 provincial and ministerial-level awards in natural science, including 3 first prizes of provincial science and technology progress awards and 1 first prize of natural science awards. Nearly 2,000 SCI papers have been independently or co-authored published. Several scientists have participated in publishing papers on top journals such as Cell, Nature and Science, etc., which achieved a historic breakthrough in research output. Additionally, at the end of 2017, clinical medicine became the first disciplinary area in Hainan Province which entered the top 1% of ESI in the world.
There are 6 university sponsored academic journals including Journal of Hainan Medical University (Chinese version and English version), Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine (English version), Asia Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine (English version), Journal of Acute Disease and Asian Pacific Journal of Reproduction.
