In 1947, Mr. Lin Xiaohai founded the private Haiqiang School of Medical Technology. In 1948, the private Hainan University School of Medicine with Mr. Song Ziwen as the first chairman was founded. In March 1951, the private Haiqiang School of Medical Technology and the private Hainan University School of Medicine merged to form the Hainan Medical College, which was renamed Hainan Medical College in 1952.
In May 1953, the intermediate department of Hainan Medical College and the nursing school attached to Hainan People's Hospital merged to establish the eighth health school in Guangdong Province, and in November, it was renamed Guangdong Haikou Health School, and the medical college was discontinued. In September 1958, on the basis of Haikou Health School, Hainan Medical College was re-established, with a medical specialty and a three-year course of study. In 1962, Hainan Medical College suspended the admission of college students, and only enrolled secondary students. In 1965 it resumed the recruitment of medical professional college students.
During the Cultural Revolution, the school stopped enrolling students for six years. In June 1970, it was renamed Hainan Administrative Region Health School. In October 1972, it re-opened Hainan Medical College, set up medical specialty, while enrolling secondary school inspection class. In 1973, it created the affiliated hospital.
After smashing the "Gang of Four", the national college entrance examination system was restored in 1977. From 1977 to 1979, the school enrolled three five-year undergraduate clinical students. In 1980 onwards, it no longer enrolled in secondary school students, and suspended the recruitment of undergraduate students, only specialist students. In 1983, five-year undergraduate enrollment was resumed, and in August, Hainan Medical Specialized school was merged into Hainan university, called Hainan university medical department.
In January 1989, the medical department of Hainan University was separated from Hainan University, and Hainan Medical College (preparatory) was established. In July 1993, the State Education Commission approved the formal establishment of Hainan Medical College.In 1994, the school was approved to grant bachelor's degrees.
In 1996 and 1997, approved by the Health Department of Hainan Province, the hospital of General Bureau of Reclamation of Hainan Province and the People's Hospital of Hainan Province were set up as Xinhua Hospital and People's Hospital affiliated to the university respectively. In November 1996, a group of experts from the State Education Commission discussed the evaluation of the undergraduate teaching work of the university. The provincial health department approved the hospital affiliated to the university as a "triple A" hospital in the same month.
On January 18th, 1997, the first in vitro fertilization case in Hainan Province was born in our affiliated hospital. In May 1997, the State Education Commission approved the confirmation of our university as a qualified institution for undergraduate teaching work. In the same year, nursing was added to the curriculum, and on May 1st, 1999, our hospital became a network hospital of the International Emergency Relief Center of the Ministry of Health.
On July 19th, 2000, the main office of the university was successfully moved to Chengxi new location.
On October 28th, 2002, the Ministry of Health approved the Hospital as the only medical institution in Hainan Province approved to carry out assisted human reproduction technology, which became one of the first 8 units in China with the approval.
In 2003, the University was identified by the Ministry of Education as a unit for joint training of master's degree students, and since 2004, the University has been recruiting master's degree students jointly with Peking University and other universities.
On September 17th, 2004, the second session of the first congress of Hainan Medical College of the Communist Party of China was held, putting forward the "three-step" development strategy goal, determining the path of unique development, and began to build a more dynamic institutional mechanism, clearly pointing out that the school should have distinctive characteristics of tropical medicine and health care.
In November 2005, the evaluation team of the Ministry of Education came to our university for on-site inspection and evaluation, and on May 8, 2006, the Ministry of Education announced the conclusion of "Good" for the evaluation of our undergraduate teaching work level.
On December 8th, 2005, the university passed the inspection and evaluation of the provincial education department for "safe and civilized ecological school" with excellent results. In 2006, the university started international student education. In 2007, the university launched the action plan of bidding for a medical university.
In 2008, we celebrated the 60th anniversary of our school and designated 2008 as the "Year of School Celebration". In January 2010, our digital multi-functional library was completed, and the year 2010 was designated as the "Year of Health and Wellness".
In June 2011, our students won the first prize in the South China Divisional Competition and the second prize in the national finals of the 2nd National Higher Medical School Student Clinical Skills Competition. In September 2013, the 8th meeting of the Party Committee of the university discussed and approved the application for renaming as a medical university in 2018.
In January 2014, the university passed the expert evaluation of the three master's degrees in clinical medicine, public health and nursing. On June 9th-12th, 2014, a group of experts from the Ministry of Education carried out the accreditation of the clinical medicine program of the university.
On September 25th, 2014, Graduate Student Recruitment of our university was officially launched in 2015, and the three academic degree authorization points of clinical medicine, basic medicine and pharmacy, as well as the three professional master's degree points of clinical medicine, public health and nursing accepted the online pre-application for "recommending exemption for master's degree", and implemented the enrollment work in accordance with the relevant policies of the Ministry of Education.
On April 28th, 2015, Hao Xishan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, was appointed as the honorary dean of Hainan Medical College. In June 2015, the Ministry of Education announced the conclusion of the accreditation of the clinical medicine program, and our school passed the accreditation with the term of valid for 6 years.
On July 13th, 2015, the signing ceremony of the head of the scientific and academic team (PI) of Hainan Medical College was held, marking a substantial breakthrough in the reform and innovation of the research system mechanism of our university.
On July 18th, 2015, the signing ceremony of the affiliated cancer hospital project of Hainan Medical College was held in our university. On May 13th, 2016, our university held the mobilization meeting of Hainan Medical College undergraduate teaching work audit assessment and renamed medical university, and fully launched the above mention work.
On September 19th, 2016, the awarding ceremony of the focal point of the Chinese member units of the UNESCO Bioethics Education Promotion Agency was held in our university.
On October 21st, 2016, the university held a grand conference on the renaming of affiliated hospital of Hainan Medical Hospital and Provincial General Hospital of Agricultural Reclamation. According to the document approval of the provincial editorial committee, the affiliated hospital of Hainan Medical College was renamed as the first affiliated hospital of Hainan Medical College. Provincial agricultural reclamation general hospital renamed the second affiliated hospital of Hainan Medical College, adding a Hainan Medical College affiliated Agricultural Reclamation Hospital sign.
On April 5th, 2017, the academician forum and academician workstation inauguration ceremony of Hainan Medical College was held in our university, marking the official launch of the 1st medical academician workstation in Hainan Province and a series of activities to commemorate the 70th anniversary.
On June 1st, 2017, the signing and unveiling ceremony for the establishment of the affiliated Maternal and Child Health Hospital and the affiliated Children's Hospital of Hainan Medical College was held in the Provincial Women and Children's hospital. On July 23rd, 2017, the academician workstation (tropical medicine) of Kang Le and Gao Fu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was established and the academician forum was grandly held in our university.
On July 24th, 2017, the University and Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine successfully signed a contract to start comprehensive cooperation in many fields，such as personnel training, discipline construction, scientific research and innovation, to promote the accelerated construction of our university to become a high-level medical university with distinctive characteristics in a tropical area of the Country.
